Alyson and Cobie Discuss “How I Met Your Mother”

CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother is enjoying its most-watched season, averaging 10.1 million, up 10% from last year. That’s an unusual phenomenon for a seventh-year show. For the actresses, both mothers of young daughters, the stories have centered on babies. Both Hannigan and her character, Lily, are pregnant, and the latter is due to deliver before the end of the season.

“In true sitcom form, it does not go as smooth as it should,” Hannigan says during an interview on set at MacLaren’s, the bar where the characters often meet. As a mother, “I’m a little concerned about Lily’s pregnancy choices. She isn’t the most responsible pregnant lady.”

And Smulders’ Robin learned she can’t have a baby in one of the show’s more serious story lines. She says viewers will find out more about Robin and Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), who has a new girlfriend, before the end of the season.

“Robin has had a rough year. There’s been a lot of mostly downs, so I feel like the ending (of the season) is a beginning,” Smulders says. “I’ve always felt the show was very relatable. It’s nice being on for seven years, because you get to evolve and you get to have babies, and you get to have relationships that fail or prosper. And you get to see these people grow up and imagine what their lives are like, and you kind of feel part of it.”

Robin also had a tough moment with Ted (Josh Radnor), putting an end to thoughts of a romantic renewal in their on-again, off-again relationship.

“It’s cool, the evolution of our characters, because that’s so not a conversation you would normally have in their 20s,” Hannigan says. “Now that they’re in their 30s, there are conversations you need to have, because whether you want to admit it, there’s a timeline. ‘Oh, you want marriage and kids?’ Tick-tock. These are things that people in their 30s go through.”

‘Avengers’ star Cobie Smulders on spending her hiatus in a catsuit

When “How I Met Your Mother” star Cobie Smulders was confirmed as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) sidekick and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill for Joss Whedon’s upcoming adaption of “The Avengers,” it’s safe to say the heart of the Whedon-verse skipped a beat.

(Smulders, after all, was the first choice for Whedon’s shelved “Wonder Woman” project.)

Zap2it spoke with Smulders during production of the Season 6 finale of “HIMYM,” and what she could reveal about her upcoming role was very costume-centric.

“We start in April, which is like… tomorrow,” Smulders says. “I literally leave here and I go to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to shoot some scenes in a catsuit.”

No, you’ll likely never see her sporting those magical bracelets, but at least she’ll make it to the big screen in some type of skin-tight superhero regalia.*

“I’ve tried on portions of the catsuit,” says Smulders, “[and] I’ve seen conceptual drawings of what they want it to be. It’s fascinating to me. I feel like wardrobe becomes very creative on these types of movies because they literally spend weeks designing just the pants or the emblem. It’s such an all-consuming process, so I’m excited to see how it all turns out.”

Her and several million others.

How I Met Your Mother’s Cobie Smulders: Robin Sparkles Gets “Extremely Dirty” in Outer Space

After hitting the mall and building sandcastles in the sand, it’s time for Robin Sparkles to boldly go where How I Met Your Mother has never gone before: outer space.

“We don’t mess around. It’s Part 3, time to go all out,” Cobie Smulders tells TVGuide.com. “And Robin Sparkles is out of this world. Or at least her fashion is.”

The jelly bracelets and cool graffiti coat — and, of course, the Robot — all return on Monday’s episode (8/7c, CBS) as more of Robin’s bubblegum pop-star past is revealed — with a twist. Unlike the past two Robin Sparkles episodes, which featured music videos of her catchy tunes, Chapter 3 comes in the form of a low-budget Canadian crime-solving educational program, Space Teens — Robin’s failed variety show that was referenced last season.

Though Space Teens — which also stars Robin’s former BFF/keytarist extraordinaire Jessica Glitter (Nicole Scherzinger) and Mother’s other favorite Canadian, Alan Thicke — is targeted at kids, it may need an adult-content warning.

“It’s extremely dirty, which is funny since in the first Robin Sparkles episode, everyone thought she was a porn star,” Smulders says. ” Alan Thicke is doing his prime ‘creepy old man’ routine. No Canadian sex acts are taught, but it’s a lot of sexual innuendos, playing with the idea of two teenage girls in space with Alan Thicke. … He’s like the Charlie to our Charlie’s Angels. We solve crimes using math, which is pretty normal. The idea of it is so outlandish that we’re able to play a lot within the craziness of this ’80s show.”

You grew up in Vancouver. Canadians are notoriously polite. Pretend that we’re Canadian. Insult us.
I don’t know if a Canadian would do that!

C’mon! If there were a gun to a Canadian’s head…
First of all, if it were a Canadian, it would be a shotgun, because we have very few handguns. Second of all, I think the word “hoser” would be used, but the Canadian would have to drink lots of beer to slip up like that.

Mmm…beer. What’s your favorite Canadian brew?
I love Moosehead. Yes, that’s a beer!

On HIMYM our favorite backstory is Robin’s teen pop-star alter ego, Robin Sparkles. Will we be getting more?
We sure will! It’ll be a variety show with me and Nicole Scherzinger. She’s an attractive lady, and she can sing, so Mama Smulders over here has got to work on the old pipes. We’re also gonna have Alan Thicke, who’s very good at playing the dirty old man. It’ll be interesting!

When you were growing up, were you more of a Tiffany fan or Debbie Gibson fan?
Debbie. In fact, the Robin Sparkles video “Let’s Go to the Mall” was sort of loosely based on her “Electric Youth.”

‘How I Met Your Mother’s’ Cobie Smulders: Robin Sparkles’ return

After tackling the mall and the beach, Robin Sparkles is going to outer space.

The pop-star alter ego of “How I Met Your Mother’s” Robin Sherbotsky (Cobie Smulders), Sparkles makes few appearances on the series, but she’ll return in a November episode when the gang finds footage from a Canadian variety show she once starred in with Alan Thicke (returning as a cartoonish version of himself) and a fellow teen darling, Jessica Glitter (Nicole Scherzinger).

Zap2it stopped by the set during the filming of “Space Teens,” where Smulders explains its fairly sound premise. “It’s just a show about teenagers in space, solving crimes with math,” she says, “which sounds kind of awesome.”

Awesome and kind of obscene. “It’s a little bit racy,” she admits. “There’s a lot of sexual innuendos regarding Alan Thicke and me and my partner in crime, Nicole Scherzinger. The gang is basically watching it, waiting for the porno to star.”

Clearly, it never does. But it comes close — at least for 8:00 p.m. on CBS.

As for her non-sparkly character, Smulders maintains that she’s just as in the dark about a possible reunion with Barney as we are. “You know what, in this world, anything is possible,” she says to the suggestion that the wedding seen in the Season 6 premiere was her own. “I really don’t know who it is, but there will be a wedding. Someone’s getting married.”

Cobie Smulders on How I Met Your Mother, Reprising Robin Sparkles and On-Set Jam Sessions

She may not be a former Canadian pop star in real life, but Cobie Smulders plays one on TV. As Robin Scherbatsky on CBS’s Emmy-winning How I Met Your Mother, the Vancouver-born actress plays a morning-news anchor who dabbled in bubblegum pop music in the early ’80s under the stage name Robin Sparkles. And while Robin’s clique of thirtysomething friends — played by Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan — have only uncovered two recordings to date, the music videos have been so popular that they have inspired dozens of fan parodies on YouTube. Aside from being a former pop star though, Smulders’ character is also the show’s consummate bachelorette who just this season won the heart of Neil Patrick Harris’ comically machismo bachelor.

As How I Met Your Mother’s fifth season winds down, Cobie Smulders caught Movieline up on her character’s lost variety show with Alan Thicke, the scenes she hated filming this season and her favorite guest star to date.

[Spoilerphobes beware: Smulders revealed a few mild plot twists ahead in the series’ fifth season.]
